Plascene and the Changing Market in Plastic Recycling

Traditionally rPET is more expensive than virgin PET, but as consumers become more aware of how to dispose of plastics, the technology of recycling plastic bottles from disposal to sorting, and at the plant the process of turning materials into superior rPET products has much improved. These developments as well as global government incentives and investments have all assisted in rPET becoming a more desirable selection for the buyer of plastic packaging.
(1)‘COST. Virgin PET material is produced by combining raw material inputs [purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and monoethylene glycol (MEG)] in a polymerization process. In contrast, post-consumer recycled PET must travel from consumer to MRF to reclaimer / re-processor to end user—at each stage there is potential for yield loss and inefficiency. Two very different processes result in very different cost structures. In 2017, the estimated average cost to produce virgin PET was $0.52-0.56 per pound, while the cost to process and produce rPET was estimated at $0.60-0.65 per pound’.


While all of our PET products that we produce at Plascene are 100% recyclable, we do offer production of recycled PET products also. We care as much about pollution as our customers do, and if you are a business and you rely on packaging for your food, beverage, nutrition for pharmaceutical products – your customers will care about rPET too. It is also important to note that consumers are more conscious in their buying decisions, a recent study conducted by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) suggests that the American consumer is willing to pay an average of 10% more on a product if that has been recycled.(2)
