Top 5 Environmentally Healthiest Bottled Water Options for 2022

Summer is upon us and that means looking for ways to stay hydrated and healthy. For most of us, bottled water is the go-to solution. I mean, sure you can just drink water from the tap or even *shudder* the garden hose, but bottled water offers convenience and portability. Plus, it's just better for you.

I can imagine some of you raising an eyebrow at this suggestion. After all, water is water, right? It's meant to be tasteless and odorless. It's all made from the same recipe... two parts hydrogen to one part oxygen.

The fact is, some brands of bottled water offer benefits you're not going to find in the city water supply. The folks at WWF7 Water Resources have put together a comprehensive list of the best and healthiest bottled water brand. Today we're going to look at the top 5 brands on the list.

But just because you're looking for a healthy way to hydrate doesn't mean the environment has to take a back seat. As you know, we here at Plascene take sustainability seriously. So in addition to giving these brands a shout out for their health benefits, we're also going to be looking at their plastic choices.

#1. Essentia Water

Essentia Water

Ken Uptain founded Essentia Water in 1998 after experiencing firsthand the benefits of ionized alkaline water in Japan. His engineering team developed and refined a process that would not only purify and ionize the water, but would remove the acidic ions to give the water a smooth and refreshing taste.

  • Purified to 99.9%
  • pH level of 9.5
  • Infused with electrolytes

"Our bottles are PET-1, which is BPA (bisphenol A) and phthalate-free and can be recycled at virtually any recycling facility in the United States." [Source]

#2. FIJI Water

FIJI Water

FIJI boasts that its water is "naturally filtered" through layers of volcanic rock. As a side effect of this slow filtering process, the water is naturally infused with electrolytes.

  • No added ingredients or chemicals
  • pH level of 7.7
  • Twice as many electrolytes as other bottled water brands

"FIJI Water has announced it is in the process of making all of its bottles from 100% recycled plastic (rPET) by 2025." [Source]

#3. Acqua Panna Natural Spring Water

Acqua Panna

Acqua Panna comes from a natural spring in the "sun-drenched hills of Tuscany." The water is naturally filtered in a process that takes 14 years from spring to bottle. This gives Acqua Panna a smooth taste that makes it a favorite for use in cooking.

  • No added ingredients or chemicals
  • pH level of 8.0
  • Signature taste of natural spring water

"[W]e only use 100% recyclable materials for our packaging and we encourage consumers to actively recycle to preserve the planet for future generations." [Source]

#4. Evian

Evian

Evian traces its origins back to 1789, when the Marquis de Lessert discovered the natural spring in the French Alps that would eventually become Evian's source. The water from the spring is mineral rich and naturally filtered, giving it the benefits of mineral water *and* spring water.

  • No added ingredients or chemicals
  • pH level of 7.2
  • Naturally occurring electrolytes and minerals

"Between 25-50% of each Evian bottle is made from rPET, but we're on a mission to make our plastic bottles from 100% rPET by 2025." [Source]

#5. Icelandic Glacial

Icelandic Glacial

Sourced from the Ölfus Spring, Icelandic Glacial is a naturally alkaline water with a low mineral content that gives it a naturally smooth taste. Icelandic Glacial is also the first bottled water to be certified as CarbonNeutral for both operation and product.

  • Low mineral content
  • pH level of 8.4
  • Naturally alkaline

"Icelandic Glacial's commitment to sustainability is reflected in the bottle and cardboard packaging, both of which are 100% recyclable. In addition to our glass line, we offer BPA-free high-grade rPET bottles." [Source]

PET, rPET, and Bottled Water Sustainability

It's truly refreshing (pardon the pun) to see so many bottled water companies making an effort to reduce their carbon footprint and be environmentally sustainable by using recycled plastic in their packaging. At Plascene, we strive to produce wholesale packaging solutions (including water bottles) that meet our customers' needs while minimizing our impact on the environment. And if our customers have their own sustainability goals they're trying to meet? Well, we're all too happy to help.
