3 Topics the Entrepreneur Should Consider with Packaging their Brand

Libby Day • Aug 08, 2019

Industries of every type rely on plastic product packaging. Plascene develops innovative solutions, that are 100% Recyclable, and use less material. Plastic packaging cuts down on transportation costs, and is less likely to get damaged in transit - important factors to consider, not only for sustainability, but for profitability for the business. Read on to learn 3 things the entrepreneur needs to consider in their packaging design.

How Plascene Helps Entrepreneurs

Over the years we have developed trust with existing clients and new clients into developing the right plastic packaging solution for many products over many different business verticals. The following are some things to consider when deciding on your brand's packaging.

1. Distribution

As part of planning your plastic packaging for your brand, distribution and transportation costs will play a key factor. If you are just at the development stage or you're considering a relatively small product launch initially then perhaps the packaging needs to be delivered as it would look without the product inside it. However if you are at the stage where you will be sending the packaging to be filled on a larger scale, for example hot filling the packaging with product, then PET preforms are the solution. PET is an acronym for Polyethylene Terephthalate and is 100% recyclable. The preforms are made with a view to be blown into final shape at the point where product will be added to the packaging. The fact that the PET preforms will be transported in their smaller form will allow for more volume of product to be shipped by Plascene to your distribution centre, resulting in a higher yield to transport costs which increases profitability for your business.

2. Design

The  design of your packaging should reflect the intended use of the product and it is important to consider the end user, your customer in this concern. For instance, I'm sure you have come across at some time a shampoo bottle or condiment bottle that was impossible to actually get the product out of, or a lid that was impossible to open with wet hands. The fact is, it doesn't matter how good the product is inside, if the customer experiences these issues on using your product, it's highly unlikely you will have a repeat sale. The color of the plastic that you use is also key, if you are developing a liquid product, like a natural smoothie you would probably wish to use a clear container, but if you are selling a white sports protein product you would see better results from selecting an opaque plastic in a color that reflects and or compliments the branding that your graphic artist has developed. It's a good idea to really look at the shelves at the supermarket, and consider product placement, the size, color, shape and even the cap are all integral design considerations that can impact how your brand can stand out on the shelf against the competition.

3. Storage & Sustainability

Now you have your product in its plastic packaging and the product looks great, but have you considered how the product was to be stored and shipped once it leaves the packing and distribution centre? This is really a consideration that should be made at the design stage, as can have huge impacts on your profitability. It impacts how you will be storing a product internally, time for employees to pack and store at the warehouse for instance, and externally to your two end users being a. The retailer and B. The consumer. The retailer will be making the decision on product placement as to whether a product can be stacked easily for storage or at point of display and sale level. The consumer will be looking for a product that can be stored easily in their fridge or cupboards at home. All of Plascene's PET preforms are 100% recyclable, but of course it is the consumer who has the responsibility as to the end of the products life cycle, ultimately it is their choice on whether they will be disposing the of the packaging in the appropriate way or repurposing the packing for another use.
